Local textile superstars Meg Viney-Bell and Zetta Kanta have combined forces for Whispering Landscapes at Gippsland Art Gallery.
In this illuminating joint exhibition Meg and Zetta explore the mysteries of the natural world through a range of ideas, including the consciousness of nature and its relationship with humankind.
Highlighting the importance of speaking about the environment and its preservation, Zetta responds to the Gippsland bushland. “I imagine trees whispering amongst themselves and I keep wondering: ‘What do they talk about?’” she asks.
In describing her work, Meg Viney-Bell says, “my intention is to prompt a cognitive appreciation of the whisperings of the landscape in which we live and of which we are an integral part.” Drawing on panpsychism – “the belief that all of nature is conscious – indeed many of the world's cultures believe there is a deep emotional connection between humans and the rest of nature”, Meg’s work embraces the connection between humans and nature.
Visitors have the opportunity to meet the artists at the First Friday event on Friday 1 November at 2.00pm. Meg and Zetta will be talking about their art and techniques, followed by afternoon tea. This is a free event, with no bookings required.
The exhibition celebration for Whispering Landscapes will take place on Friday 15 November, 6.00pm, and all are welcome to attend.
Whispering Landscapes will be on display from 19 October 2019 to 26 January 2020.
